The Seasons in Kennebunkport

The most popular time of year to visit Kennebunkport is in the summertime. The beaches are open. All the restaurants and shops are open. The weather is conducive to many activities- walking, hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, sailing, golf, tennis and many others.

However, what is less known is that Kennebunkport and southern coastal Maine are fantastic peaceful places throughout the year. The summertime (June/July/August) is busy, active, vibrant. Less known, the so called “off season” is extraordinary in a different way- it is peaceful, quiet, and a change of pace from the sometimes-hectic pace of life elsewhere.

Consider returning to Kennebunkport in the “off season” (September-May). What will you find?  Most of the restaurants and shops will be closed. Many of the hotels will be closed until summertime. No busloads of people from cruise ships stopping in Portland will be arriving in town. The beaches will be empty. The weather may be difficult, it might be cold and cloudy.

What else will you find? Compete tranquility. The essence of Kennebunkport remains. You will find several fabulous restaurants open all year. You will find it easy to make reservations, but mostly you’ll find no reservations are needed for immediate seating. You will find incredible live music if you plan ahead. You will find the beaches to all be there- you will have to wear a sweater or a coat to walk on the beach- but your reward is that you will have the beach to yourself. Sometimes there will be cloudy skies but that will increase the beauty of the scene. You will find hot chocolate, hot coffee, hot tea and warm croissants taste better. You can find solace and intellectual joy visiting our historic library where you can relax quietly with a good book. You can find space to celebrate reunions with family and old friends. You can make new friends.

The first two weeks of October is an extraordinary time to visit when the fall color explodes into beauty. Enjoy a bonfire at the point at sunset overlooking Bass Cove.

Enjoy fall and winter in a quiet private way just yourselves. This time is also a great time to meet family, or school mates, or other friends at Bass Cove Point for a fun reunion where the focus is renewing and strengthening relationships.

Sometimes taking the road less traveled, as visiting Kennebunkport in the “off season,” will bring you delightful surprises, new adventures, and a discovery of inner peace and harmony.

Try it.

Don’t want to drive? Take the train. We’ll pick you up at the nearby Wells station.

You can walk to town and the shore from our place so you don’t need a car here. Ask us about this option.

For those who like social activities, action, and fun events- the area has some wonderful seasonal events. These events are known to those who live in the region and others who have learned about them. But most people living outside this region do not know about these wonderful experiences. Try them. Find unexpected memorable experiences.

Jan & Rick

A magical time of year. Families dress up and go to town to trick or treat in all the local restaurants and shops.

A favorite of ours is to go to the Hurricane Restaurant in Kennebunkport, sit in the bar area at the front of the restaurant, have drinks and dinner and watch all the kids and families come into the foyer to get candy. A special life-time experience.

Alternatively, children and families come from throughout the region to enjoy Halloween trick or treating in Kennebunk on the street known as Captain’s Row (grand houses built by ship captains in the 1800’s). The tradition of decorating the grand New England classical houses in extraordinary ways for Halloween is a regional Maine favorite tradition and a sight to behold.
